Overview

OUR CURRICULUM Britain’s National Curriculum is generally split into four Key Stages, with primary school comprising Key Stages 1 and 2. The two stages help young students develop basic but important skills through a wide range of subjects. Key Stages were incorporated into the British education system with the enactment of the 1988 Education Reform Act, which also created the national curriculum. The 4 Key Stages break up primary and secondary school into sections defined by age, whereby each provides the next level designed to enhance and assess pupils’ learning skills. As aforementioned, primary school encompasses Key Stages 1 and 2; KS1 students are mostly aged between 5 and 7 (Years 1 and 2), and those aged 7 to 11 fall into the KS2 category (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6). Early Years Foundation Stage – ages 3-5 (Nursery and Reception) Key Stage 1 – ages 5-7 (Years 1 and 2) Key Stage 2 – ages 7-11 (Years 3-6) Key Stage 1 and 2 share almost the same curriculum elements, with Literacy, Numeracy and Science as core subjects. EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (NURSERY AND RECEPTION) The Foundation Stage is a distinct stage of education for children aged up to five years old. Within our setting, the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum consists of seven key areas of learning that underlie our daily activities. Your child will mostly be taught through games and play. The areas of learning are: 1.communication and language 2.physical development 3.personal, social and emotional development 4.literacy 5.numeracy 6.understanding the world 7.expressive arts and design KEY STAGE 1 Through Key Stage 1, the Literacy subject is designed to help pupils work towards being able to read reasonably quickly and puzzle out any new words that they encounter for themselves. They are also taught how to write in complete sentences. In Numeracy, the focus is usually on being able to count, read and write numerals up to 100 and write in words up to the 20th digit. Students are also helped to understand the concepts of ‘more’ and ‘less’ (addition and subtraction), especially on a number line. Key Stage 1 Science aims to develop the learner’s inquisitiveness and observation skills. It also requires students to be able to identify and classify certain things, in addition to collecting data. KEY STAGE 2 The Key Stage 2 Literacy curriculum, which spans a larger portion of the child’s life, helps students to progress from reading with a focus on comprehension to reading to grasp overall concepts through age-appropriate literature. Pupils’ writing skills at this stage are expected to evolve from being able to write well-punctuated and structured sentences to having the ability to express their ideas clearly across a wide range of subjects. In Numeracy, the curriculum is structured to enable them to perform a wide range of mental arithmetic calculations and other mathematical strategies that will give them a good head start for key stage 3.This stage also sees students go from learning purely observable concepts through the Science subject to understanding more complex and abstract concepts. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Despite the long day at school, your child is not going to be satisfied if that is all she has to stimulate her throughout the day. Here is where extracurricular activities come into play. After a snack and some rest, your child will benefit greatly from a non-academic activities that he/she has an interest in. He/She can choose something like sports, chess clubs, scrabble club, monopoly club, dance clubs, martial art club(karate, judo etc), book clubs, music clubs, and so on. Your child is bound to find something she likes! Academic activities are often not aimed at all-round development, and this is why every child needs to be involved in one extracurricular activity. Kids often also learn other important life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving skills and other things they will need to grow up into well-balanced adults. School has made attempts to make such environments for children, and so there are different options for your child to choose from, such as school bands, dance teams, and sports teams. They can even join the school paper team and hone their skill in writing. It is most often during extracurricular activities that children find others their ages that have common interests and lifelong friendships are forged.
