Overview

Government College Umuahia (GCU) founded in 1929 by Robert Fisher and recently acquired from the government by the Old Boys  and managed by a team of reputable Old Boys known as the Fisher Educational  Development Trust (FEDT) is an all boys, world class residential secondary school located in Umuahia, Abia State. GCU (as it is called) offers a combination of the British and Nigerian  curricula with a focus on excellence. The school runs a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) focused curriculum whilst not disparaging the Art and Humanities. We are poised at educating students to become world leaders who can innovate and solve 21st century challenges. GCU is committed to academic excellence; situated in a safe and serene  environment and developing great leaders for a dynamic global society.   Deeply rooted in the values and legacy of our core heritage, GCU believes  in the dignity  and worth of each child, little wonder, we pride ourselves in  our strong and distinguished Alumni who have excelled at their various  careers, yet owe allegiance to the values, education and strong heritage of Government College Umuahia.   We have distinguished Alumni members- Chinua Achebe, the multiple  international award winning novelist, Gabriel Okara, a renowned poet, Christopher Okigbo and a host of others. Our name resonates in the political sphere- we have a range of great  alumni who have served Nigeria- Dr Okwi Nwodo, a former Governor of  Anambra State, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, Mr  Achike Udenwa, a former governor of Imo State, etc.   We are proud of our 100 years legacy! The modern GCU is technology driven. Our students and faculty are exposed and use 21 century learning-teaching skills. We have learning support to assist slow achievers to meet their set targets. Our learning support meets with international standards. For meaningful and impact learning to take place, our class is designed for small group meetings. That way our teachers can reach each boy whilst nurturing them to their full potentials.   Our faculty is world class. We have recruited the best of teachers across  the country. The principal, Mr Anaclayto Springfield, heads the faculty. GCU affords every child the opportunity to explore, create, collaborate, think critically and have grit. Our curriculum is embedded in skill teaching  and acquisition. We expose our students to 21st century skills; then give  them the opportunity to exhibit these skills.   We are a private international global school situated in the hospitality and rich cultural values of Nigeria. Therefore, GCU is an international school  built on Nigerian soil.
